Novel Heart Pump Moves Blood Without Contact

Novel Heart Pump Moves Blood Without Contact
Jun-28-16
Researchers have developed a novel new cardiac support system that helps the heart pump without making actual contact with the blood.

Typical heart pumps also come with a host of problems, including damaging red blood cells and causing clot-producing turbulence. As a safer alternative, the cardiac support system from the team at EPFL consists of three rings made out of a material called Dielectric Electro Active polymer (DEAP) that changes shape when exposed to an electrical current. The rings are placed around the aorta, where they are subjected to an external magnetic field that causes them to flex in turn and create pressure waves that help the blood move through the aorta.
