Ocean Array Proposed to Clean Plastic Patches

Ocean Array Proposed to Clean Plastic Patches
Mar-29-13
Boyan Slat, a 19-year old entrepreneur, has proposed an array of floating devices in order to clean up the plastic floating in huge patches on the ocean.

The Ocean Cleanup Array would be made up of a network of floating booms and manta-ray shaped processing platforms sent to the plastic patches and anchored in place. The array would surround the patch and the angle of the booms would force the plastic to the platforms, which would be powered by the sun and wave action. Using the booms to sift the plastic instead of nets would result in very little bycatch, and plankton could be filtered and returned safely to the ocean using a centrifuge.

Boyan Slat has founded The Ocean Cleanup Foundation to develop his proposed technologies.
