A perfusion machine able to repair livers and keep them alive for a week could significantly increase the number of organs available for transplant.
The device was developed by researchers from Zurich using a complex perfusion system that closely mimics the body’s functions. The result of four years of work, the perfusion machine keeps the organ alive with hormone and nutrient infusions, oxygenation, waste removal and red blood cell management.
In tests on damaged human livers, the device restored function to six of ten livers, making them viable for transplant.
