A new, stronger PLA composite could make the recyclable bioplastic more commercially viable.
Although polylactic acid (PLA) thermoplastic is made from renewable sources and is fully recyclable, it is not very strong when used on its own. To strengthen the material, the team from Fraunhofer created a composite PLA made up of two types of the bioplastic with different melting points. During manufacturing, woven PLA fibers that melt at a higher temperature are embedded in a PLA matrix, resulting in a material much stronger than the pure form that remains fully recyclable.
