Xerox’s new printed electronic label able to hold 36 bits of rewritable memory could offer a new—and better—way to slow the spread of counterfeit goods.

Developed using technologies from the company Thinfilm, the labels (also being called “printed memory”) can hold up to 68 billion points of data, including information on shipping, serial numbers, or specifics about dosages on medications. The information in the labels can be read using a wireless reader attached to a smartphone, and more sensitive information could be encrypted to be read only with an approved device.
