A new retinal imaging camera could eliminate the need for pupil-dilating eye drops often administered during eye exams.
Created by a multi-university team, the prototype camera is made from easily available parts and is small enough to be carried in a pocket. Instead of the typical visible light used to focus on the retina, the camera relies on infrared light—which does not trigger the pupil to close. A quick burst of white light captures the image once the focus is achieved.
