The Rainshader is a more crowd-friendly umbrella, designed to reduce the chance of dripping on someone’s feet or poking them in the eye.
Designed by Stephen Collier, the Rainshader’s football-helmet type shape allows it to channel water forwards and backwards, rather than from all sides. The back of the umbrella reaches low, providing added protection behind, while the front remains open for better forward vision. The Rainshader has also withstood gale force 7 winds in a wind tunnel and, since it is made with fiberglass ribs, is safer in electrical storms.
Collier got the idea for the Rainshader while attending a large, outdoor sporting event in the rain. It is specifically designed for major sporting events, and he believes the large open surface of the back could be attractive as a vehicle for advertising.
