Restorative Nerve Gel Could Prevent Paralysis

Restorative Nerve Gel Could Prevent Paralysis
May-19-13
A newly-created gel developed by a team at Tel Aviv University could significantly improve the healing of damaged nerves and restore functionality.

The Guiding Regeneration Gel (GRG) is designed to be used in conjunction with a tiny, flexible, biodegradable implant tube. After the inner surface of the tube is coated with the gel, it is placed around the severed ends of the nerve where it holds the two nerve ends together. The GRG compound contains three components to help stimulate nerve growth by reducing inflammation, providing a track for the nerve fibers to grow along and preventing drying (a major danger for implants).

The GRG material itself can also be used to help aid in cell therapy, keeping cells alive during transplantation.
