A San Francisco hospital is using robots to dispense medication from its pharmacy, minimizing the chances of a patient receiving the incorrect medicine.
The University of California at San Francisco Medical Center uses the PillPick system from Swisslog to separate and store individual doses of bulk pills. When the physician's orders are electronically entered into the system, the PillPick chooses and packs the pills, then barcodes and hangs the doses on a plastic color coded ring. The robots work in a sterile environment, which protect the medication from contamination while also reducing the risk of exposing human pharmacists to toxic drugs.
Over 350,000 doses of medication have been prepared so far without a single mistake.
