A new UAV able to use its wings to walk could be particularly useful in search-and-rescue operations.
The robot, called DALER (Deployable Air Land Exploration Robot), was designed using the Adaptive Morphology approach, which allows it self-adjust its shape to fit the needs of terrain. The wings of the robot are able to function as ‘legs’ while on the ground, giving the robot more mobility options without the need for added structures—and added weight. The ability to navigate complex terrain would allow the robot to travel in places that single-locomotive robots are not able to go.
