Sa Umbrella Relies on Origami for Strength

Sa Umbrella Relies on Origami for Strength
Nov-09-14
The Sa umbrella re-thinks the conventional metal ribs and mesh fabric with its origami-inspired design that is stronger, more efficient and easier to recycle.

Already far-surpassing its funding goal on Kickstarter, the key to the Sa's increased structural integrity lies in its interior canopy, which replaces the metal ribs and opens in order to spread the larger, top canopy. The panels in the design keep the umbrella from opening wider than it is meant to—preventing it from blowing inside-out—and also reduce the umbrella's weight while adding extra headroom. The Sa is held closed by magnets around the rim, and the majority of the umbrella is made of recycled plastics.
