The Scalevo wheelchair takes users to new levels with its retractable tracks that allow it to climb and descend stairs.
Originally emerging as a prototype from a 2014 student project at ETH Zurich, the Scalevo is modeled on the Segway’s system of balancing on two wheels, which allows it make sharper turns than the conventional chair. Where the Scalevo shines, however, is with its retractable treads that descend from the undercarriage to move the rider up or down a flight of stairs. Pistons attached to the treads help keep the chair level.
The Scalevo system will compete at the cybathlon championship in 2016.
