The self-powered smart keyboard generates electricity as you type while also identifying authorized users.

The technology is based on an effect called electrostatic conduction, which causes a charge to be generated every time a finger strikes a key. By fitting the keys with a plastic material coated with a layer of electrons, the team was able to harness that charge and use it to power the keyboard--and potentially other devices as well.

The system is also able to detect nuances of typing style, which are unique enough to serve as a password.
