A simple and affordable test for fluoride in water can be used onsite with no special training.
The test, from a team at Northwestern University, consists of a small test tube holding a freeze-dried and stable RNA reaction. When the water sample is added to the test tube, the RNA will rehydrate and react with any fluoride ions in the water, turning the water yellow in response to the concentration. The results currently take two hours, but the team is working to speed the process.
According to Associate Professor Julius Lucks, project lead, "We want it to be an easy, practical solution for people who have the greatest need. Our goal is to empower individuals to monitor the presence of fluoride in their own water."
