Solar-Powered Kira Sail Yacht

Solar-Powered Kira Sail Yacht
Aug-18-14
Designed to bridge the gap between sailing vessels and motorized yachts, the solar-powered Kira Sail Yacht features solar cells in the sail and turns the keel into the battery.

The yacht, designed by Sebastian Campos Moller, is equipped with solar panels that have been integrated into the horizontal ribs of the sail. The panels harvest solar energy and use that energy to charge the vessel's battery—which also functions as the boat's keel. As part of his design, Moller adapted the lead in the keel of the boat into a huge battery that will hold the stored energy, rethinking the boat's layout in a novel way.

The Kira Sail Yacht was also designed with computer controls, so it can be operated by a crew of one, and the decks have been redesigned to offer more than 80 percent extra space. The vessel recently won the bronze award at the 2014 International Design Excellence Awards.
