Geared toward residents of underdeveloped regions, the Solarball needs only the sun to purify water.
Developed by Jonathan Liow of Monash University, the Solarball can purify three quarts of water per day when placed in direct sunlight. As the water evaporates, the contaminants separate from the water, resulting clean condensation that is stored for drinking.
Due to the small size of the Solarball, it is not yet a solution to solving the water problems of a large village, but it remains an interesting idea.
