Researchers have created smart windows able to darken when heated and harvest solar energy.
Developed by a team from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the thermochromic glass will darken as it is heated by solar energy, which forces methylamine molecules from the material. As the material cools, the molecules are absorbed again, rendering the glass transparent. According to the team, the glass offers a solar power conversion of 11.3 percent, and they are currently working to improve the window’s reliability over time.
