Researchers are experimenting with ways to use “sonic bullets” to target and destroy cancer cells.
The method, developed by scientists at the California Institute of Technology, involves using rows of tiny steel spheres that have been arranged to form a cube. As the sound waves travel through the balls, they emerge as a concentrated pulse that has more power than conventional ultrasound. This pulse allows for a higher resolution image while also focusing the waves more precisely, which reduces the risk of damage to surrounding tissue.
The new technique could also improve sonar, creating more detailed images of underwater objects.
