Researchers have embedded flexible, transparent electrodes into textile fibers, bringing us even closer to wearable electronics.
The team grew the monolayer graphene by chemical vapor deposition onto copper foil using a sophisticated nanoCVD system. The graphene/copper substrate was then transferred to a polypropylene fabric using a technique common in the textile industry, resulting in the first example of a flexible textile electrode truly embedded in yarn.
According to Dr. Helena Alves: “The concept of wearable technology is emerging, but so far having fully textile-embedded transparent and flexible technology is currently non-existing. Therefore, the development of processes and engineering for the integration of graphene in textiles would give rise to a new universe of commercial applications. “
