Thin Film for Wearable Orthosis Device Controls Essential Tremors

Thin Film for Wearable Orthosis Device Controls Essential Tremors
Oct-30-15
A new pressure sensitive thin film able to control the symptoms of essential tremor can determine the difference between an intentional and accidental motion.

Developed by a team from Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute, the technology(called Higher Sensitivity Tactile-film System for Wearable Orthosis or HSTS), is designed to fit inside wearable orthosis devices. The system is made up of the tactile film fitted with an array of sensors as well as software to process the acquired data and the robotic orthosis. Because the tactile film is not affected by skin temperature and hydration, it is more effective than EMG control when differentiating between an intentional movement and a tremor.
