Thin Film Sensor Reads Glucose Levels

Thin Film Sensor Reads Glucose Levels
Dec-24-17
A thin film biosensor could offer a needle-free method for monitoring blood glucose levels.

Developed by a team from Tsinghua University, the biosensor relies on a paper battery that is attached to the wearer’s skin, creating an electrochemical gradient in the underlying tissue. Hyaluronic acid (common in skincare products) is then applied to the battery’s anode, causing the blood vessels in the skin to release more glucose, which then flows to the battery’s cathode. After about twenty minutes, the battery is removed and replaced with the biosensor, which converts the sugar molecules into electrical signals that can be read using standard laboratory equipment.
