Total Plastic Recycling

Total Plastic Recycling
Dec-16-10
Scientists from the University of Warwick have developed a system that could recycle 100% of household plastics.

Because most plastic items are mixed, only 12% of plastics are actually recycled. The Warwick System is based on a fluidized bed reactor which can break down mixed plastics, causing them to behave like a liquid. The liquid plastics can then be distilled, allowing useful elements to be retrieved. The leftover char could be sold as activated carbon.

Lead researcher Prof. Jan Baeyens believes that 10,000 tones of plastic wasted could be converted into over $7 million worth of useable chemicals.

As far as the total (100%) recycling of the plastic is concerned the idea is worthy, but for its chemical by-products i am not agreeable to exploit it because with the new kinds of chemicals we will further contribute to the global warming by introducing new breed of pollutants to the environment. Creating another tech to clean those pollutant is another nightmare for mother earth.
