Transforming Car Could Save Pedestrians

Transforming Car Could Save Pedestrians
Apr-16-09
A collaboration led Cranfield University in the UK has developed an experimental system for cars that could cut the death toll of pedestrians.

When the new system detects that the car might hit a pedestrian, it automatically raises the rear of the hood, which then releases a giant airbag in front of the windscreen.

The raised hood helps absorb some of the impact which then reduces the forces on the victim, thereby minimizing injuries. In tests, this innovative technology has been shown to significantly reduce the chance of injuries or death in automobile-pedestrian collisions.
