Using technology developed in the 1800s, a Swedish team has created what may be the world’s most efficient solar system.
Developed by Ripasso CSP, the system uses a Stirling engine, developed in 1816, which drives its pistons by cooling and heating an enclosed gas. The gas is heated using a parabolic mirror to create a “tiny hot point,” driving the pistons that turn a flywheel in order to generate electricity. The solar dishes also move on their axes during the day to follow the sun for maximum solar capture.
The Ripasso system is able to covert 34 percent of the captured light directly into grid-available power--about twice the amount of conventional systems.
