VelociRoach Squeezes to Find Survivors

VelociRoach Squeezes to Find Survivors
Jun-24-15
Inspired by the rounded shape of the cockroach, the VelociRoach roach-bot can squeeze through tight spaces, which is particularly useful in search and rescue missions.

The VelociRoach can fit in the palm of the hand, and is equipped with sensors able to detect sound and heat. To allow the bot to squeeze through tight spaces—such as the rubble of a collapsed building—the engineering team created a body shape that lets the robot turn to the side and traverse cluttered or rough terrain.

When sent into a collapsed building, the VelociRoaches could scurry through debris to find survivors and alert rescue teams to their location.
