Whale Tails Propel Boats Through Waves

Whale Tails Propel Boats Through Waves
Jun-21-15
A new ship design based on the shape of a whale’s tail could allow the vessels to move more efficiently though rough waves and open seas.

In development by a team of international partners, the whale tail system features a pair of streamlined, hydrofoil-like fins installed at the front of the boat. As the boat is lifted by the movement of the waves, the fins move with it to produce lift that helps to propel the boat forward. While providing additional momentum, the fins could also help to reduce the pitching and heaving caused by large ocean waves.
