THE STARTUP COMMUNITY WAY: Evolving an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

By Brad Feld and Ian Hathaway

In THE STARTUP COMMUNITY WAY: Evolving an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (Wiley; July 28, 2020), early-stage investors and startup advisors Brad Feld and Ian Hathaway explore what makes startup communities thrive, and how to improve collaboration in these complex and rapidly evolving environments. It is a sequel to Feld’s groundbreaking book STARTUP COMMUNITIES: Building an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Your City (Wiley; July 28, 2020).

Many cities fail to nurture startup communities because governments, large corporations and universities are not effectively collaborating with entrepreneurs or with each other. All too often, these players try to control activity or impose their plans from the top-down, rather than supporting a collaborative experimental environment that is led from the bottom-up, principally by entrepreneurs.

A critical disconnect remains between the entrepreneurial mindset and those of many other organizations who wish to engage with and support entrepreneurship. There are structural reasons for this, but these obstacles can be overcome with appropriate focus, specific behaviors, and sustained practice.
