Basically I use "old-fashioned" non-computer methods (at least initially). I sit down with pencil and paper and puzzle very hard to come up with an idea or solution. After this stage I seem to have the ability to continually run the problem through my thoughts almost continually - even while doing other tasks or even while watching TV etc.
I make a point of initially not researching the problem to see what others have done - I think doing this usually tends to lead you down the same path as others have done and prevents really novel ideas and solutions.

- I think the best example of my problem solving ability is my invention of the Helical Camshaft. This invention of a mechanical wide-range stepless variable valve opening system for poppet-valve engines had generally been regarded as a "holy grail" of the automotive world. Despite probably more than one hundred years of effort by thousands of engineers and many others and the expenditure of vast amounts of money, essentially there was no solution to the problem. However it is generally acknowledged that my invention of the Helical Camshaft system is a valid solution to the variable duration problem. Details and comments on the Helical system can be found by Googling "helical camshaft" - noting especially my website and the Wikipedia article on the subject. I also wrote both the website and the Wiki article - I think these demonstrate that I can write at least reasonably understandable English. Running out of allowable space - but also solved variable gear puzzle.
