Joseph Smallfelt's Problem Solving Experience:

  1. For 5 months this past summer, I led a trail crew of 5 young adults throughout the national forests of northwest Montana. We cleared and maintained existing trails, and also built new ones. One of our biggest challenges was to install a new trail that traversed a muddy bog. I spent a good amount of time discussing the solution with my co-leader, and then asked the crew members for their input as well. Our solution was to create a raised trail surface. Since we were several miles into the wilderness, we accomplished this without power tools, using only resources that we had available from the forest. My co-leader and I felled the large trees to use as bridge-stringers and framework. Other members cut smaller trees to steak the larger pieces into places. The rest of the crew skinned the logs and collected gravel to fill the turnpike. The biggest factor in our success was that the plan was communicated clearly to the entire crew before any work began.
