Areas Paul Mayer is Knowledgeable in:
I am particularly knowledgeable in biochemical methods and theory. However, I am interested in applying my knowledge and creativity to help identify solutions to problems in a variety of areas including (but not limited to) medical communications, medical devices, personalized medicine, as well as more traditional biological/biomedical topics.
Techniques Paul Mayer Uses:
Brainstorming, divide and conquer, look for analogous problems with known solutions (research), hypothesis testing, trial and error, lateral thinking
Paul Mayer's Problem Solving Skills:
- lentivirus production
- immunoprecipitation, co-immunoprecipitation
- mammalian cell culture (including primary neuronal culture)
- characterization of DNA-protein interaction using EMSA
- in vitro transcription/translation
- molecular cloning
- SDS-PAGE, western blot, silver stain, mass spectrometry
- immunofluorescence and bright-field microscopy
- protein purification of overexpressed protein in bacterial expression systems and endogenous protein from tissue
- repair, maintenance and purchasing of lab equipment
Paul Mayer's Problem Solving Experience:
- - In my Ph.D. lab, I established a NEW research project to investigate the cellular and biochemical characteristics of a brain specific variant of an essential metabolic protein that dramatically slows the rate of axon degeneration when expressed at high levels in neurons
- Designed and created a multiuser database using Microsoft Access to organize all relevant information for each mouse in 23 different lines (approximately 1000 mice)
