Paul Mayer

Areas Paul Mayer is Knowledgeable in:

I am particularly knowledgeable in biochemical methods and theory. However, I am interested in applying my knowledge and creativity to help identify solutions to problems in a variety of areas including (but not limited to) medical communications, medical devices, personalized medicine, as well as more traditional biological/biomedical topics.

Techniques Paul Mayer Uses:

Brainstorming, divide and conquer, look for analogous problems with known solutions (research), hypothesis testing, trial and error, lateral thinking

Paul Mayer's Problem Solving Skills:

  1. lentivirus production
  2. immunoprecipitation, co-immunoprecipitation
  3. mammalian cell culture (including primary neuronal culture)
  4. characterization of DNA-protein interaction using EMSA
  5. in vitro transcription/translation
  6. molecular cloning
  7. SDS-PAGE, western blot, silver stain, mass spectrometry
  8. immunofluorescence and bright-field microscopy
  9. protein purification of overexpressed protein in bacterial expression systems and endogenous protein from tissue
  10. repair, maintenance and purchasing of lab equipment

Paul Mayer's Problem Solving Experience:

  1. - In my Ph.D. lab, I established a NEW research project to investigate the cellular and biochemical characteristics of a brain specific variant of an essential metabolic protein that dramatically slows the rate of axon degeneration when expressed at high levels in neurons
    - Designed and created a multiuser database using Microsoft Access to organize all relevant information for each mouse in 23 different lines (approximately 1000 mice)
