Valarie Thomas's Problem Solving Experience:

  1. Devised a multi-material, multi-layer thin film layer interface deposited between a thin aluminum oxide layer and a stainless steel plate that served to prevent the formation of the traditional pinholes and cracks in the aluminum oxide layer when the monolithic system was heated to temperatures as high as 700 Celsius
  2. Devised a series of system modifications that enabled continuous flow partial hydrogenation of a vegetable oil at a desired temperature using a traditional PEM fuel cell system
