Techniques Charles Laster Uses:

Analytical, like when making a part of an old gun. First a blueprint of the part is needed. Than a way to make it, which may involve custom jigs or fixtures to make the part.

Holistic, In developing my design for earthquake resistant masonry an overview of how structures fail produced the insight that any solid wall will fail under sufficient seismic load. This lead to a design for a "non-solid" wall that could move and return to its normal position.

Inspiration, sometimes the answer just comes to you. Stumped on a way to protect the elbow and knees in my body armor design, I was at am impasse when the solution just popped into my head.

Charles Laster's Problem Solving Experience:

  1. I developed an effective body armor in 1989 which required solving a number of specific problems. Material selection research resulted in a laminated plate that was highly effective and lightweight. How a material fails can be as important as how it resists failing. The materials chosen for the laminate exhibited a high energy absorbing ductile failure pattern that enhanced overall performance in the layered laminate.

Good design increased performance. A modular concept with overlapping pieces resulted in a "spring leaf" that helped to absorb impacts. It used a harness system like current military helmets which allowed air circulation for comfort and a lower moment of inertia which farther increased performance.

The military went with soft body armor rather than a plate armor design, even though mine could cover the whole body if needed. They did not share the reason for that decision.
