I am interested in entomology and insect rearing. Additionally, I am interested in microbiology and genetic modification of plants. My experience as a research associate in R&D biotechnology gives me a broad set of skills that are necessary to develop a genetically modified plant, from bacteria to gene to greenhouse. I see biotechnology as the future of agriculture.
Techniques Edward Richards Uses:
I used iterative design processes.
Literature review was also used in the development of solutions.
I consulted with industry experts to make a synthesis of ideas.
Edward Richards's Problem Solving Skills:
Protein extraction and purification
Bio-saftey comity annalysis of projects
development of resistant insect colonies
Insect resistance testing
Western Corn rootworm rearing (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera)
Growing corn and soybeans for research
Isolation of bacteria from environmental samples
Green house research
Edward Richards's Problem Solving Experience:
I developed an egg laying substrate for Western corn rootworm, that eliminates the need for soil.
I developed a method for isolating Bacillus thuringiensis from soil samples that allows for a more isolates to be isolated from a single sample.
I developed an insect emergence container that eliminated the need for hand counting of Western corn rootworm.
I developed a feeding method for brown marmorated stink bugs.
I developed a bio-assay method for western corn rootworm. It allows for good results from a 24 well format.
