I tend to dissect a problem, finding the underlying problem. The problem is then used to create a list of specifications necessary to fix the issue. Then I research what solutions currently exist and how they fit the problem. Finally I take all that knowledge and develop a solution of my own, making a working prototype and then a final prototype.
