During the final year of my degree I have researched the effects of saturated fatty acids on the swelling of rat liver mitochondria. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the saturated fatty acids, palmitic acid and myristic acid, on the mitochondrial respiration and oxidative stress in the liver, which is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This helped to understand, whether these saturated fatty acids destabilised the mitochondrial membrane potential, which in turn leads to oxidative mitochondrial dysfunction.
