Matthew Mingay's Problem Solving Experience:

  1. I developed an algorithm that collects tweets containing keywords (different cryptocurrencies) and uses machine learning to calculate a positivity score based on words, phrases and sentiment within the tweets.
  2. I developed multiple novel analysis approaches that utilize web-scraping and interactive data visualization to improve the process of extracting biological insight from massive DNA sequencing datasets.
  3. I have developed many interactive web applications that can be used for interactive, user-friendly data visualization and exploration. One specific example allows users to explore the relationship between clinical attributes and the expression of different genes within the thousands of cancer patients analyzed during The Cancer Genome Atlas project that began in 2013.
  4. I developed biochemical techniques to improve the efficiency of DNA extraction, purification and preparation from samples with limited numbers of cells, improving DNA sequencing protocols.
  5. Using deep learning I applied long short term memory, recurrent neural nets to predict changes in the value of highly liquid commodities like currencies, stocks and cryptocurrencies.
  6. I conceived and created an organization called DataSense while a student at the University of British Columbia which brought together more than 300 students interested in Big Data and Data Science for data related competitions and presentations from multiple blue chip tech companies (IBM, Google, Facebook etc.). We also found work placements and careers for multiple members in alignment with our original mission statement: "To educate, inspire and employ the next generations of data scientists".
