Techniques Rachel Hart Uses:

I work in a fast evolving specialist laboratory which is faced with new challenges every day. The ability to 'think on your feet', problem solve and 'think outside the box' is a prerequisite.

I have been involved in various process analysis projects to free up 'man time' in a department limited by resources.

Some other examples of problem solving techniques I employ are:-

Root cause analysis - looking at the causative reason repeat issues keep arising
Experimentation/trial and error - working in a lab, sometimes you just have to try one technique over another and see if it is better or worse
Inductive reasoning - drawing sound generalised conclusions
Failure mode and effect analysis - looking for problems in proposed ideas before they are introduced
Means end analysis - identifying what steps would be needed to solve a problem

Rachel Hart's Problem Solving Experience:

  1. Identifying and rectifying a problem with a diagnostic procedure that was causing false positive results for a hospital associated bacterial infection (Clostridium difficile). I was informed by the Consultant that I had potentially saved the hospital millions of pounds as false positive results lead to unnecessary patient isolation & care and fines are imposed on hospitals for exceeding limits on the number of positives.
