Sunil Moothedath's Problem Solving Experience:

  1. Had to create a Star wars BB8 spherical robot that was 20 inch tall.

The hard part of keep the head attached to the body while still being able to easily roll on the ball required a new swiveling magnetic attachment for the head and a way to reduce the noise created as the head rolled on the body. Requiring special noise cancelling rollers.
  2. Had to create an LCD game which felt like playing pool with only a tiny low pixel LCD

To generate the feel of actually hitting a cue ball , a computer mouse was created that had a similar weight to a cue ball, will AA batteries for weight and a mouse trackball at the bottom to sense direction. The trackball also allowed the ball to roll smoothly in any direction it was hit also register the direction of hit to show the result on the LCD screen.
  3. A toy that needed a soft squishy movement yet durable enough to last in kids hands.

After trying a multitude of fabrics and silicones, I finally figured out the best way to prototype the action using a material that was used to make stretchy balls. The shell of the ball was inverted over to create the a soft structure that was held in place by molded open-cell foam.
  4. Had to create a lifelike StarWars - Yoda Animatronix least amount of motors.

most servo activated arms actions did not provide a life like action, so I figured out at way to uniquely move the wrist and the shoulder simultaneously proving an extreme amount of movement with just 2 motors. It had a total of 8 motors to give head, both arms stepping forward and back and spinning around.
