Terry Mazanec's Problem Solving Experience:
Our challenge was to monetize natural gas. The conventional process to convert nat gas to diesel fuel requires an oxygen plant to feed oxygen to the system. I experimented with using high temperature solid oxide fuel cells as membranes to convert methane using the oxygen that passes through the ceramic electrolyte. With modest success I revised the system to eliminate the electrical circuitry to make it simpler, cheaper, and more effective. We achieved the target oxygen production rate within a year and I formed an international consortium to develop and commercialize the technology. More than $300 million investment has been made and development continues.
