3D Models Let Surgeons Practice Brain Surgery

3D Models Let Surgeons Practice Brain Surgery
Aug-06-15
Physicians at Boston Children’s Hospital have developed a technique for creating 3D replicas of regions of the brain, allowing the surgeons to practice before surgery.

Even with the large amount of brain-data that can be gathered from different scans, operating in the brain is an arduous process—for both the doctor and the patient. To help smooth the procedure, the team used the data from various devices to create life-sized models of the region the surgeon will be operating on. The 3D printed models were built in partnership with the Boston Children's Hospital Simulator Program (SIMPeds) and demonstrated a 98 percent match with the patient’s anatomy.

When compared to similar operations, the four patients whose surgeons practiced on 3D models first enjoyed a 12 percent (30 minutes) reduction in operation time.
