The 3D Printed Fashion project aims to develop a process that can create finished clothing from raw materials in a single step.
The 18-month project, headed by Dr. Guy Bingham of Loughborough University, relies on the advancements in Additive Manufacturing (AM) textiles to print complete garments from a raw material, such as a polymer, in a single operation. With the fashion industry creating up to 1.8 million tonnes of waste material a year, the 3D technology could allow for the creation of bespoke clothing while also reducing waste.
According to Dr. Bingham, "We envisage that with further development of the technology, we could 3D print a garment within 24 hours."
