More than aesthetically pleasing, the self-cleaning Active Ceramic tiles also react with air pollutants to turn them into non-toxic mineral salts.
The idea for the pollution-fighting tiles was conceived as a way to create a tile that was able to do double-duty by playing "an active role in improving the quality of human life." The Active tiles have been covered with a layer of titanium dioxide, which will trigger a chemical reaction when exposed to a light source and air humidity. This process, called photocatalysis, will decompose the most common pollutant particles in the air and turn them into mineral salts.
The tile can also break down grease and bacteria molecules and can be cleaned with only water, reducing the need for detergents and adding to the tile's eco-friendly appeal.
