Affordable Sensor Detects HIV Sooner

Affordable Sensor Detects HIV Sooner
Feb-22-17
A tiny and inexpensive sensor able to detect HIV within a week of infection could allow for earlier screening as well as more efficient blood donation procedures.

Created by the Instituto de Microelectrónica de Madrid, the sensor “combines nanomechanical and optoplasmonic transduction methods” to detect the HIV-1 capsid in human blood. The sensor is not only inexpensive, but also provides a limit of detection that is five orders of magnitude better than the most recent generation of immunoassays.
