A new paper-based test able to quickly identify blood types could have applications in the field, remote clinics and during multi-trauma events.
Created in collaboration between Monash University and Haemokinesis Pty Ltd, the Group Legible Immunohematology Format (GLIF) card is made up of a special, bioactive paper embedded with antigens able to detect the sample’s blood type group. To use the test, the person simple drops a sample of whole blood in the card’s clear window, waits a minute, and then washes the sample with the GLIF solution to reveal the results.
The test is easy to use and very affordable, and could have wide-ranging applications in the developing world.
