Aging Process Enzyme Identified

Aging Process Enzyme Identified
Nov-03-11
Researchers have identified an enzyme they believe plays a significant role in the aging process.

Restricting caloric intake without restricting vitamins and minerals has been shown to slow the aging process. The enzyme Prx1, identified by a team at the University of Gothenburg, is an integral part of caloric restriction. The team demonstrated that while Prx1 is damaged by the aging process, caloric restriction counteract the damage by producing a repair enzyme.

Since impaired Prx1 function can lead to various cancers and genetic defects, it's possible that increased levels of Prx1 could help delay, or even counteract, the development of cancer.
