AMPY Harvests Energy While You Walk

AMPY Harvests Energy While You Walk
Nov-06-14
The AMPY kinetic energy charger has surpassed its funding goal, and may soon see us charging our devices by taking the stairs.

The AMPY harnesses the energy of everyday motions—no great feats required, though up-and-down motions are best—and stores it in its onboard battery. According to the developers, a daily average of 10,000 walking steps is enough to provide three hours of battery life to a smartphone. Running or cycling will generate even more energy. The AMPY can be used to charge any device with a USB 2.0, USB 3.0 or micro-USB port (tablets and laptops are outside its range, for now), and it can used on-the-go, harnessing energy as it charges the gadget.

The team has reduced the size of the AMPY relative to other kinetic chargers through the development and use of its proprietary inductors—resulting in a much more compact device that weighs just under five ounces and measures three inches square.
