ApiFix Corrects Scoliosis With Gradual Ratcheting

ApiFix Corrects Scoliosis With Gradual Ratcheting
Feb-16-13
The ApiFix, which recently received European regulatory, approval, is a new, minimally invasive method for treating Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Currently, the method for treating AIS involves a long and expensive surgical procedure. In contrast, the ApiFix system consists of a small ratchet mechanism implant attached to the center of the main spine curvature. The implant uses only two screws and the implant procedure creates a much smaller scar than current methods. After the hour-long surgery, the patient then undergoes physical therapy treatments that cause the implant to gradually move the spine into the correct position, capturing the small corrections performed by the patient. The correction process extends over months to allow the soft tissues to accommodate the new position.
