Armchair Encourages Exercise

Armchair Encourages Exercise
Feb-08-13
Designed with the elderly in mind, the GEWOS armchair conceals a workout station within its cushiony embrace.

The GEWOS looks and feel like a typical armchair, but it features an array of sensors built into the seat and armrests. The sensor monitor blood oxygen levels, pulse rate, blood pressure and weight, sending the data to the integrated software that uses the information to create user-specific exercises. The data is also sent to the TV via Bluetooth, allowing the user to view trends over time and watch videos of different exercises.

If the user is feeling a bit flabby, the chair can be transformed into a rowing machine, with the armrests forming the oars and a foot support that pops out from under the seat. The team also plans to add cognitive games to the system, encouraging mental as well as physical health.
