Physicists have stored data within the magnetic spins of atomic nuclei, creating the most memorable spintronic device yet.
Spintronics involves storing information in the magnetic compasses of atomic particles, usually in the electrons. The electrons have very short memories, however, on the order of microseconds. The nucleus of an atom is longer lived, and physicists have been able to store information in the nuclei for almost two minutes.
This could be the world's tiniest computer, though it does have its problems. The computer needs a magnetic field 200,000 stronger than Earth's, and it operates at -454 F.
