Beating Hearts Could Power Pacemakers

Researchers have created an energy-harvesting device powered by the beating of a heart, which could be used to replace batteries in pacemakers.

The device, developed by engineers at the University of Michigan, harnesses its energy through the vibrations caused by the heart as it beats. Magnets capture the vibrations and store the energy for use, generating 10 times the amount necessary to power a typical pacemaker. The new piezoelectric device is also about half the size of conventional pacemaker batteries.

Currently, pacemakers must be replaced every five to ten years when their batteries run out. The new device could eliminate that need, reducing costs and saving patients from surgery.

My Grandma recently had a pacemaker insertion carried out hospital, as she was finding it hard to breath and her heart was not beating correctly. Since this I have been researching about pace makers, as I find it quite interesting! I am glad that I stumbled across this article! Its amazing what research can show! Thanks for sharing!
